18 Maple Street, Belfast, Maine
Coffee, warm bread and a seat by the window.
A small corner café on Maple Street. We roast nothing, rush nobody and bake everything here — bread at five, buns at six, soup on the stove by half eleven. Come in, sit down, take your time.
Today, Tuesday: 7:00am – 3:00pm
Soup goes on at 11:30am
Out of the oven
Cardamom buns, 7am sharp
Ask what is still warm — it is usually a bun.
What we’re known for
Four things, done properly
Filter coffee, done properly
One single-origin on batch brew, a second on the grinder. Refills are a dollar until 11am.
Bread out of the oven
Sourdough and morning buns, baked here from 5am. When the tray is empty, it is empty.
Lunch that sticks
Soup, chowder and toasted sandwiches. Two soups a day, one of them always vegetarian.
A room worth sitting in
Window seats, a long table, wifi and a plug by every bench. Dogs are welcome; wet ones especially.
The two of us
Ellen bakes. Marcus burns things and calls it roasting.
We opened Maple & Main in 2016 with one espresso machine, two long tables and a second-hand oven we are still repairing. Ellen does the bread and the buns from five in the morning; Marcus does the coffee, the soup and the small talk.
Regulars do not need a menu — the postman takes his coffee black, the bookshop takes a standing order of scones on Saturdays, and the table in the corner belongs to whoever gets here first.
Small print, told plainly
- Two tables take a booking for six or more, and we ask for one at a time.
- Cash and cards both welcome. The tip jar is split with the kitchen.
- Well-behaved dogs get a bowl of water and the last of the ham.
- If the board says we have run out of sourdough, we really have.
